our first two days

Our first two days...

The children have been practicing our daily routines, learning about spaces in our classroom and school, and engaging with our names in different ways. Our names are important words. On the first day the children found and circled their names on our morning message.

Welcome to Kindergarten.
Can you find and circle your name?

A kind note from a child last year; I love Kindergarten, you will love it!

Some Kindergarten students were brave to come to the front and circle a noticing on the morning message! EC found the word is. We will all learn the word is this year!

We have been going on a long hike each morning. It has been a joy to see faces, hear stories, and connect in authentic ways. The trails have provided a space for us to begin building relationships.

During the early morning the children have been exploring books at their new table spots. Many of the children have been looking at the pictures, talking about what they see, and thinking about the story! Reading and engaging with books is part of our morning routine.

We will learn about lines this year, because letters, numbers, and shapes are all made of different kinds of lines. We are made of different kinds of lines, too! We began conversations about lines and shapes by introducing pattern blocks. The children eagerly designed and built structures, connecting shapes to tell various stories. They shared their plans and ideas for their structures and we talked about the lines and shapes needed; How many triangles did you need to make your person? How many squares to make your house? At the end of our time planning and building, BS bravely shared his flowers and race car with his peers. Through the sharing of their structures, the children are also practicing essential speaking and listening skills.

An important part of being in Kindergarten is taking care of your personal space. One way we take care of our space is cleaning up after snack and wiping our own tables. We will spend time in the coming weeks learning about and practicing how to be safe and responsible together!

kindergarten open house

On Monday we invited children and families to our school in small groups. While families thought about and wrote hopes and dreams for their child's Kindergarten year, the children toured the classroom, practiced washing their hands, learned about our morning routine, found a cubby, and designed a cubby sign.

On Wednesday we will continue our soft start with a focus on connections and community!

Meet the Kindergarteners!
