In Math Workshop this week, we practiced counting by twos! Counting by twos helps us grow as mathematicians; it helps us understand important math concepts like even numbers and helps us learn different ways we can count!
On Monday, we read "Eggs and Legs" by Michael Dahl. In this book, Mrs. Hen sees that all of her eggs have run away! Where did the eggs (and their legs) go? As we read about the journey the eggs went on, we asked questions like "if there are three eggs, how many legs are there in all?". We then created our "Chick Chart" where each kindergartener drew a chick with two legs and added it to the chart. We built our chart as a community, and we practiced counting by twos to see how many legs each row of chicks had. We also shared noticings about the chart. Some that we came up with were:
I notice that the chart looks like stairs! Each row has one more chick.
I notice that there are 56 legs in all!
This was powerful math practice, and showed just how much we have all grown as mathematicians!
This math work also incorporated a new Fundations skill we have been working on: digraphs! In the word "chick" on our "Chick Chart" we focused on the "ch" and "ck" digraphs, showing that our practice in Fundations can be found all throughout our day in Kindergarten!
On Tuesday, we applied what we learned from our work with "Eggs and Legs" and did a story problem. All kindergarteners answered the question: 3 chicks on the farm. How many legs in all? We discussed different ways that we could show our thinking (with a picture, with an equation, with our tiles, etc.) and each kindergartener showed their thinking in a powerful way.
What a fun week we had counting by twos! Every kindergarteners showed that we can count in different ways, and that we are always growing as mathematicians.
