The children have been growing as readers. They are growing in many different ways, from learning about letter sounds and developing their foundational skills to finding words they know within text!
Letter Names/Sounds
Building the vowels Ii and Uu on the trail. While building a letter, children practice producing the letter name and sound and respond to specific prompts.
We have learned t, b, f, n, m, i, u, c and o. We will continue to practice and reinforce our knowledge of letter names and sounds every day. You can use these ideas for practicing at home, too!
Children further explore letters by taking initiative during choice and building letters in different ways!
We can listen for letter sounds at the beginning of words by sorting objects and pictures and working in our letter books. We also grow when we play our letter-picture-sound match during morning meeting!

As readers, we learn from the pictures and the words. As we prepared for a different kind of reading, we celebrated with a gift; a teaching book about our names! The children eagerly read the pictures and then pointed to and read the repeating text; This is _____ .
With the shared excitement about the word is (we read it every day on our morning message!) we had to highlight is on every page. The children reread their book of names and carefully highlighted is.
When asked, how many times did you highlight is today? They quickly responded 23, because we have 23 friends. In October of Kindergarten all of us can read a book with 23 pages!
We Are Storybook Readers
We have practiced reading teaching books (like a book of our names) and storybooks. We have compared teaching books and storybooks, noticing how teaching books teach you with information and storybooks tell a story from beginning to end with characters. We have practiced using the pictures and what we know about a story to read it. We have brought stories to life by sounding like the characters and acting stories out.
The children have extended our work into choice, by making their own copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar (a favorite storybook!)
Transfer and Application
The children have been growing in other ways, too!
They have worked hard to transfer their knowledge of letter sounds into the labeling of lego structures during choice. Like in Eleanor's example of her robot dog, baby dog and the baby dog's bed.
We have also been working on following the directions for writing kind notes and asking peers what they would like on their note.
In the below example Brianna got Sullivan's picture from our board and wrote his name on a note. With support, she asked Sullivan what he would like on his note; a cat! This moment is an example of growth in speaking and listening skills as well as following the directions for writing kind notes in our classroom.
