we love to play!

We have connected our love for play to all of our learning this week.

Fundations

We asked the question, What do you like to play with?

We practiced responding to the question, I like to play with ____ .

We built a sentence using the interests of our peers; Lyra likes to play with Leo!

Reading

We have connected our reading strategies to our sentences about play. We have practiced using more than one power this week; pointer power, picture power, and sound power.

When we use all of our powers we point to the word we are trying to solve, we get our mouths ready for the beginning letter sound, and we check the picture- helping us to read the word.

Writing

We thought of things that we like to do in Kindergarten, using our ideas to plan a teaching book about Kindergarten. The children planned across pages and shared an idea for each page. Lucy surprised us with her idea of we love to spell, but she does love writing words!

1. We like to count.
2. We like to play.
3. We like to build.
4. We love to spell.

We practiced stretching words like rubber bands, using sound power to listen for letter sounds. We will finish our class teaching book on Monday and share pictures on the blog of our writing next week!

Academic Choice

We introduced additional building materials this week, enriching our daily play experiences!

Elsie, Lyra, and Acadia worked in the block area, using wooden letter tiles and sticky notes to add labels to their structures.

We like to build and we can use sound power when labeling our buildings; Flower, Green House, Park, Garden, Roof Top Garden, Gems...

We like to build with dominoes, too!

We can count and show how many using dominoes.
Brianna wanted to count how many large dominoes in our classroom.
She found the number 30 on our 100's chart and added a label to show how many.

Asa was working with a rhyming puzzle and challenged himself to count how many pieces a different way; by two's! He counted how many pieces by two's, adding a label for each match.

Lucy and Xalya have been working with our new letter stamps. Inspired by a peer, they wanted to create all of our Fundations cards using stamps and their own drawings.

Izzy used exploragons to build a bunny, counting and showing how many exploragons she needed for her build. Then she had the idea to build the label; bune.

River practiced naming letters by building the alphabet with his exploragons during choice.

Cullen built a boat with his legos. With support, he used sound power to listen for the beginning, middle, and ending sound in boat. He wrote a letter for every sound he heard; bot.

Karyna wrote a kind note to mom and added more detail; a picture and label for dad.

Hunter wanted to add the label car to his lego structure. He used a different strategy to write the word. On his own, he used one of the books from his basket, finding the word car and writing it on a sticky note to label his lego structure. Hunter shared his strategy with his peers and we celebrated the many different ways we can be problem solvers in Kindergarten.

Academic Choice and Play provide a powerful context for being a problem solver.

Outside

Many of our play sentences were inspired by our experiences on the big playground this week.

We like to . . .
