We have been preparing for our learning celebration. On Wednesday, the children worked together to write a checklist of what we would share with our families, highlighting the three things; reading and retelling a book, reading our published true stories, and playing a math game. The children used our classroom, a familiar sight word, and knowledge of letter sounds to write the words on our checklist.

We have practiced introducing and retelling books, trying to sound like a teacher when introducing a book and using book talk power to retell the important parts of a book.

Read My (published) Writing
Ben used pictures from a mentor text we have used, The Hike, to record what our published writing needs; the words first, next, then, and finally, pictures and words to show who and where, and detail (action marks, speech bubbles, labels, and sound words!)
The writers checked their first drafts with a partner and then rewrote their final drafts, bringing their published books to life with color and front covers.
As part of our preparations, we invited the first graders into our classroom to share our books and writing with one another.
We Can Work on Reading Goals!
Ms. Celeste supported the children to set reading goals. She introduced a goal as a big next step, something to work on. She connected to the language and visuals of our classroom; stars and next steps. She read The Magical Yet and we celebrated how we might not be able to do something yet, but the more we practice, the more we grow- the stronger we get.
Celeste used our reading powers to structure and guide the setting of reading goals. Each child wrote their name on a sticky note and put it on our anchor chart. Then they used pictures and words to show what they are working on.
At the end of each conference, Celeste planned to check in with the children and their families about their reading goals.
We have all grown and we are still growing- there is always a next step.
