fairy houses (part 1)

This week we continued to prepare for the building of fairy houses!

Read Alouds

We read teaching books and storybooks about houses, homes, and shelters. The children engaged in conversation about their own homes and homes around the world.

One teaching book taught us of different materials needed to build a house. On the last page the author shared that feelings of love can create a sense of togetherness and make a house a home.
We made a list of the materials we will use to build our fairy houses and Briana remembered the importance of building with love.

Clay
Sticks
Pinecones
Gems
Shells
A little bit of everything
Stones
Little flowers
Leaves
Moss
LOVE (Briana!)

We sorted books, from stories about builders to teaching books about houses and homes. We noticed that a story has a beginning, middle, and end and has characters. A teaching book is about one topic and has information on every page.

Counting and Cardinality

The mathematicians eagerly sorted and counted more of our beautiful fairy house materials! We counted as a whole group and as small groups, using ten frames to organize our counting.

The morning message provided another counting opportunity; a picture of materials with the question, how many? With their own small copies of the wooden pieces, the children counted the pieces, found the number on their number line, and recorded how many- 16!

Our counting moments have also been rich with reflection; what could you use these materials for?

Building and Labeling (Academic Choice)

Academic Choice has provided ongoing opportunities for the children to be plan, explore, test, and create- telling stories through their various structures. This week the builders designed a hotel, church, mall, and house.
