This week. . .
We continued our work building and reading sentences about the things we like to do (and play!) in Kindergarten.
As a whole group we worked on our sound power during Fundations, playing the game Guess the Letter!
In Guess the Letter a Kindergartener (eagerly) holds a letter card up and their peers give them clues, like the sound that letter makes or a word that begins with that letter sound. The Kindergartener then has to figure out the card they are holding up, using what they know about letter sounds to say the letter's name.
We learned a game to play with our reading partners, making our sound power even stronger - I Spy Beginning Sounds!
When you play I Spy Beginning Sounds, you look at a picture in a book and say, "I spy something that begins with the ___ sound" then your partner has to use picture and sound power to figure it out. We also played with our alphabet chart, saying, "I spy a letter that makes the ___ sound."
You can play this game at home, too! When eating dinner, you can play I Spy Beginning Sounds around the room. When getting ready for bed at night, you can play I Spy Beginning Sounds in one of your child's books.
We planned a teaching book about the things we like to do in Kindergarten. We touched each page and the Kindergarteners shared something we like to do. The children then used pictures, beginning sounds, and words to show (and teach) about the things we like to do in Kindergarten.
Sidney wrote a book for the Kindergarten Super Readers. We love to play and Sidney loves to play, too! In her book we noticed repeating words (a pattern), a break in the pattern, and we used picture and sound power to figure out an unknown word on each page.
We had a colorful conversation about the things Sidney likes to do- what she loves to do the most- and the many different things our puppies at home like to do!
We played with small building materials during academic choice and used sound power to add labels to our structures. We know a lot about adding beginning sound labels and we are trying to be super writers- stretching words like rubber bands and listening for the sounds from beginning to end.
