love

As we work towards honoring meaningful and inclusive celebrations within our classroom community, we invite children to reflect and make connections. One of our school rules is that we can be kind. We started the year exploring kindness, what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like. We share kindness every day in our classroom. This week, with many of the children talking about love, we used what we know about kindness to explore the word love.

We read the book I Am Love and thought deeply about the word love; How does it feel to love? What happens when we share feelings of love with our community? What is love?

Monday, 2-14-22

During our Morning Meeting we asked the question;

What does love look like in our classroom?
How do you share feelings of love?

The children used their words, pictures, and labels to show how we share feelings of love in our classroom. We connected back to the sentence; I am Love, noticing the many different ways we share love. I am love. You are love. WE are love.

We share love by saying hi, sending warm thoughts, cleaning up our classroom, and connecting. Many of the children's representations of sharing love were similar to our initial representations of kindness.

Tuesday, 2-15-22

On Tuesday we talked about how community members- like readers and writers- make a plan. We used children's sticky notes from Monday to make a plan for how we will share feelings of love; connect, take care of our classroom, or use kind words (like saying hi!)

How will you share feelings of love today?

Throughout the week we noticed and celebrated the many ways we share love and kindness. We write kind notes, thinking about what our peers like or what their favorite color is. We read together and engage in partner playdates. We play together. We help one another to be persistent- especially when trying to climb on the big tunnel outside!

In our classroom love is connecting, love is being persistent, love is being brave, love is being flexible, love is making mistakes.

Love is learning new things!

As part of our work with the book I Am Love, we introduced the new sight word am. We connected our work with am to playing with -am words; changing beginning sounds while keeping the rhyme (am) the same. We introduced a new book (written by Sidney, of course) with the word am repeating on every page and we introduced a new word family book; am!

  1. Love is the kindergarten class -- a smile; bright eyes when they show me something they did; a hug around my waist; a card from the whole class (in their most careful writing); helping each other; each of them being who they are
