We have sound power and we have extra strength sound power!
As we grow as readers and writers we notice new and unfamiliar sounds. We have been working on hearing and listening for digraphs; two consonants that make one sound. We have have been exploring the digraphs wh, th, ch, sh and ck.
Ms. Celeste has supported children's tapping and blending of three-phoneme words such as ship, chip, chop, and mash.
We have read books, like Sheep in a Jeep and Sheep in a Shop, listening for the digraph /sh/ as well as noticing words that end the same or rhyme!
With clipboards and recording sheets in hand, the children went on a Digraph Search. We found, named, and recorded things in our environment with the /ch/ or /sh/ sound.
Look at River's cool shoe! What is the first sound in shoe?
What can you find in your home with the /ch/ or /sh/ sound?
We played teacher with a friend, practicing saying the name, picture, and sound for each digraph. After playing teacher, the children added a new visual tool to their baskets.
The children have been noticing digraphs in their books. Using their interest as our next teaching step, we invited them to find digraphs within text, using sticky notes during private read to record words from their books and circling the digraph!
We've used what we are learning about digraphs to add words to our block labels.
Izzy used the repeating sentence from her /ch/ book to write a sentence in the block area; This is a fox!
We continued to connect our chick word as mathematicians to our extra strength sound power. We introduced a new game; Chick Race!
The mathematicians (and readers) doubled numbers to move a little chick to different nests.
